Tomorrows - From Midi to Jamming to Single Release (Part 3)

Recording and Release

Where is tone stored?

Our producer and recording engineer, Aidan Cunningham, had elected to use the Nut Shed Studio in Clara, Co. Offaly. There is an exquisite deli counter in the Londis here; if you know, you know. We loaded up the cars and headed north from Cork. Over 3 hours later we had our supplies picked up and we were nestled in our modest and cosy accommodation for the next two nights. A few beers, some nice food and good conversation later we were all ready for tomorrow held.

We drove to the studio and had our first in-person introduction to Aidan. He was a sound man if ever there was one. We immediately clicked and our energies were combined. We set about trying to find a studio sound. We knew what we sounded like in a live room but what kind of sound do you want to convey once committed to a track. We listened and learned, chatted and waxed poetic about drum sounds, guitar tones and compression.

We set about getting the drums set up and recorded. Luke P, blasted out 2 full takes and that was all we needed. A couple of ad libs later we were done day one. It seemed to fly. Back home for a furious game of Mario Party and more beer. Day two was for Luke, Matt and Me to follow Luke's amazing drum performance. We trialled guitar tones and amp settings, twisting knobs, turning dials and flicking switches. Luke's vocal performance was stellar and we all pitched in with initial pointers on the overall mix. After we finished, we packed our gear and hit the road back to Cork.

Fast forward 5 months and we recruited a bassist, Eoin. We had developed our setlist and gotten ourselves a gig as well as receiving the full mix and master of our song. That's a lot of positive change. It was time to figure out how to drop the single. We were trying to maintain our practice schedule, adding new songs to the set almost every week until we had a solid bedrock to work with. In the middle of the practice schedule and gig preparation maelstrom, we landed on a date and got that track on DistroKid and BandCamp.

I have the admit, the feeling of seeing the listens, streams and followers come through after the entire journey was immense. This was just one leg of the journey, we'll see what happens next for us.
