Tomorrows - From Midi to Jamming to Single Release (Part 1)

Part One - The Idea

Where does the idea for a song come from?

Luke, our singer, is a man of creation. Whether it's erratic drum fills, discordant tonal structures or dissonant antiphonies, they leak from his brain like a sieve. "Tomorrows" was no different. Emerging as the dominant sound from a list of midi files we were working through as a group, "Tomorrows" or indeterminate tomorrows, as it was named in the early days, quickly became our focus. The rhythmically bizarre opening lead line played by my fellow axehound, Matt, excites and inspires what is to come in the song.

Luke has always said that for all of the complexity in rhythms and individual parts, the songs have a pop structure. It's something we gel with and draw a lot of creativity from. Pop songs have repetition and therefore they have space. And we love space. Space for a teenie pinch harmonic, or an extra palm-muted chug or a saucy drum fill.

In essence, space is where song ideas come from. When you have the space to process and distill a thought, an idea or a feeling; you can create anything.
